The abbey of Saint-Laurent is established outside the urban enclosure of Liège and dominates the city from the summits of Publémont. It was founded at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries and endowed with a monastic community by a charter from Bishop Réginard (1025-1037). Throughout the Middle Ages, the Abbey of Saint-Laurent was a major artistic and intellectual center, producing valuable manuscript works.
During the revolutionary episodes of the late 18th century, the abbey was deconsecrated and repurposed as a military hospital by the French. In the aftermath, the abbey church was permanently razed in 1804. Archaeologists will share with the public the results of excavations since 2025 and will lift the veil on this disappeared church.
