About the location

Musée national de la Renaissance
Château d'Écouen 95440 Écouen
  • Val-d'Oise
  • Île-de-France
The castle, built from 1538 to 1555 by the constable Anne de Montmorency, retains part of its original decoration evoking the atmosphere of a great patron of the time: pavements of enamelled tiles executed by Masséot Abaquesne, locks, decorated panels, and painted fireplaces. Several architects took turns for its construction, including Jean Bullant who realized the portico of the south wing to present in niches "the slaves" of Michelangelo offered by the king of France Henri II to the Connétable. During the Revolution, the castle was saved from destruction by Abbé Grégoire. Its 17-hectare park of high forests is enclosed by a wall and is crossed by large alleys leading to a plain designed by Hardouin-Mansart at the end of the 17th century.
