MEG x CCAfropea: "A matter of time”

The MEG is partnering with the Afropea Cultural Centre for a programme of events surrounding the temporary exhibition ‘The Future, what’s that?’.
How might we rethink the future by inhabiting time differently? Taking Arab-futurism as a point of departure, Daniela Nofal’s presentation explores how contemporary artistic practices by artists hailing from across the SWANA region challenge dominant understandings of temporality and open space for alternative modes of remembering, imagining and becoming.
Through three films, the session examines artistic practices that disrupt linear conceptions of time, refusing the progression from past to present to future as a fixed or inevitable trajectory. Instead, these works mobilise layered and entangled temporalities, where memory, history and speculation coexist, producing new ways of understanding the relationship between what has been, what is, and what might yet be. By tracing these different temporal approaches, the presentation explores how artists challenge dominant narratives of progress and futurity.
Speaker: Daniela Nofal is a cultural organiser and creative producer working across contemporary art, socially engaged practice and transnational cultural collaboration. Her work explores how cultural practice can create spaces for encounter, dialogue and collective imagination. Working across artistic, civic and philanthropic contexts, she has developed cultural initiatives ranging from multidisciplinary festivals to community-based and socially engaged projects. She has co-founded and nurtured several artist-led and community-centred initiatives, including Sadaa Sound Syndicate, Makkam and Cross Commons Collective. She also co-founded and directed two editions of the Syrian Arts and Culture Festival (2022-2023), a ten-day multidisciplinary celebration of Syrian artistic and cultural practices. Alongside her independent practice, Daniela stewards the vision of the Alliance for Socially Engaged Arts, a philanthropic collaborative initiative that champions socially engaged arts and advocates for their recognition as a vital form of civic and cultural infrastructure. Daniela holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Comment repenser l’avenir en habitant le temps différemment ? En prenant l’arab-futurisme comme point de départ, la présentation de Daniela Nofal explore la manière dont les pratiques artistiques contemporaines d’artistes issus de toute la région SWANA remettent en question les conceptions dominantes de la temporalité et ouvrent la voie à des modes alternatifs de mémoire, d’imagination et de devenir.
À travers trois films, cette session examine des pratiques artistiques qui bouleversent les conceptions linéaires du temps, refusant la progression du passé vers le présent puis vers l’avenir comme une trajectoire fixe ou inévitable. Au contraire, ces œuvres mobilisent des temporalités superposées et entremêlées, où coexistent mémoire, histoire et spéculation, produisant ainsi de nouvelles façons de comprendre la relation entre ce qui a été, ce qui est et ce qui pourrait encore être. En retraçant ces différentes approches temporelles, la présentation explore la manière dont les artistes remettent en question les récits dominants du progrès et de l’avenir.
Intervenante: Daniela Nofal est travailleuse culturelle et productrice créative active dans les domaines de l’art contemporain, des pratiques engagées socialement et de la collaboration culturelle transnationale. Son travail explore la manière dont les pratiques culturelles peuvent créer des espaces de rencontre, de dialogue et d’imaginaire collectif. Intervenant dans des contextes artistiques, civiques et philanthropiques, elle a développé des initiatives culturelles allant de festivals multidisciplinaires à des projets communautaires et socialement engagés. Elle a cofondé et développé plusieurs initiatives menées par des artistes et centrées sur la communauté, notamment Sadaa Sound Syndicate, Makkam et Cross Commons Collective. Elle a également cofondé et dirigé deux éditions du Festival des arts et de la culture syriens (2022-2023), une célébration multidisciplinaire de dix jours consacrée aux pratiques artistiques et culturelles syriennes. Parallèlement à son activité indépendante, Daniela porte la vision de l’Alliance for Socially Engaged Arts, une initiative philanthropique collaborative qui défend les arts socialement engagés et plaide pour leur reconnaissance en tant que forme essentielle d’infrastructure civique et culturelle. Daniela est titulaire d’un master en théorie de l’art contemporain de Goldsmiths, Université de Londres.
