Conference proposed by the Friends of LaM: "Praise of madness" by Grégory Wroman
Lecture Praise of madness by Grégory Wroman
In 1494, La Nef des fous, by Sébastien Brant of Strasbourg, was published, a moralizing book in which the foolish behaviour of man that distracted him from God was recorded. In this work, Erasmus replies with the Eloge de la Folie (1511), in which the human flaws are certainly brocarded, but where the author justifies the grain of madness that should bring a little joy to everyone. These two publications were a considerable success, at the origin of a very rich iconography (Holbein, Dürer, Bosch, Bruegel...). If, in modern times, Goya or Géricault still represent fools, it is soon the creative madness that arouses the interest of doctors and collectors, constituting a part of Art Brut. As part of the exhibition Figures du fou at the Palais du Louvre from October 16, 2024 to February 3, 2025. Price: 5€ for members of the association Friends of the LaM - 8€ for non-members, sale of tickets on site the same day.
