Les jardins du château Dauphin
6 rue du frère Genestier 63230 Pontgibaud
Puy-de-Dôme
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
A vegetable garden "as it used to be". Michel de Montaigne was the first to mention the garden. Returning from a trip to Italy in November 1581, he stopped at Pontgibaud. Located in front of the fortress of the twelfth-fifteenth century, the vegetable garden was the complement from the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The current garden, with a surface of 9000 m², well exposed to the southwest of the castle which protects it from the winds of the north, has hardly changed. The eighteenth century embellished it with two round basins with water jets fed by a source captured a few kilometers away. This vegetable garden is composed of tiles and terraces on three levels, separated by orthogonal roads. Gardens surrounded by retaining walls, set at different depths, therefore more or less warm, are suitable for vegetable cultivation.
