Initiated by Michel Bourlet, local historian, the museum has existed since 1984\.
Adjacent to the music school, it occupies part of the former concierge of the castle of Chevrette. Refurbished in 2012, the museum now presents a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the city of mourning as well as a collection organized around three main themes: Religious life, illustrious owners and guests of the major estates and economic and sociological evolution. It is a journey through 2000 years of a rich history of significant events that is offered to visitors. But the museum also offers temporary conferences and exhibitions 3 to 4 times a year.
In the 7th century, pilgrims crowded before the relics of St. Eugene hoping for healing. The village of mourning benefited from this fame. A priory was established depending on the rich abbey of Saint-Florent de Saumur. The first Romanesque church was redesigned several times. Over nearly 1000 years, it presents interesting testimonies of the evolution of architecture. After the catastrophic destruction of October 1944, it was restored and restored to its authenticity.
Several rich estates had been established since the 16th century and lasted until the 19th century. Louise d’Epinay received in her living room the most illustrious men of the Enlightenment, such as Rousseau or Diderot. The reputation of the Chevrette eclipses that of other castles, such as those of La Barre, Ormesson, Thibault de Soisy. However, they were owned by high figures who also received the celebrities of their time. Queen Anne of Austria, the young Louis XIV were received several times in mourning.
Today mourning-La Barre is an urban center with nearly 23,000 inhabitants but which does not deny its past as a rural village. Until the 50s, agricultural activities survived, but it was in the 19th century that the two-way farmers had their best years, producing quality fruits and vegetables appreciated on the Parisian markets. The vine, established since Roman times, long very famous, experienced an inexorable decline from the end of the 18th century. After 1850, the arrival of the railway caused economic and sociological upheavals.
