30 km south of Lyon, on the right bank of the Rhône, the archaeological site of Saint-Romain-en-Gal - Vienne offers over three hectares of remains of a district of the Roman city of Vienne. In ancient times, Vienna, the capital of a vast territory covering the Dauphiné and Savoy, stretched on either side of the Rhône. Today, the archaeological site and museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal transport visitors 2,000 years ago to one of the richest cities in Roman Gaul. The Gallo-Roman mosaics are the major pieces of the museum. The museography is organized around the mosaic of the "punishment of Lycurgues" discovered in 1900\. The collections provide a comprehensive overview of everyday life at that time. The chosen approach is that of an ethno-archaeological approach, with numerous reconstructions and models. The route allows you to first discover the site and its history, including the mosaic of the "victorious athletes" and the model of Vienna in the second century AD. If the trade and the economic importance of the city in antiquity are naturally evoked, the visitor can also measure the diversity of the decorations and the originality of the style of the mosaicists of Vienna. Finally, overlooking the archaeological site, a presentation of the Roman house restores it in its setting.
