Abbaye de Nouaillé

The Benedictine abbey of Nouaillé was founded in the 7th century. Rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was fortified from the 14th century. In 1356, the Battle of Poitiers took place on its territory. Tested by the hundred years war and then by the wars of religions, it knows a spiritual and material renewal from the seventeenth century which favors an ambitious reconstruction of the monastic buildings between 1730 and 1750\. Partly destroyed after its sale as a national property under the Revolution, the large south wing and its outbuildings, restored to serve as a dwelling, offer majestic vaulted volumes. The main courtyard and reception rooms will be shown to the public for the first time, with historical lighting «by candlelight» in the evening of Saturday.

Access
Nouaillé-Maupertuis is easily accessible by car, 10km southeast of Poitiers. Public parking nearby. Access spaces on the ground floor. Open to the public on Saturday 21 September afternoon from 14:30 to 20:30 and Sunday 22 September from 14:30 to 17:30.
