On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Residence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in France will exceptionally open its doors to the public on Saturday, 19 September 2026.
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to discover the Hôtel de Charost, a jewel of Parisian architectural heritage located in the heart of the 8th arrondissement. Built in 1725, this splendid mansion illustrates the elegance of 18th-century French architecture and bears witness to centuries of diplomatic and cultural history.
Acquired by the British government in 1814, the Hôtel de Charost has been for more than two centuries the official residence of the ambassadors of the United Kingdom to France. Over the years, it has hosted many personalities and was the scene of significant moments in Franco-British relations.
Visitors will be able to explore the ceremonial salons, the ballroom, the gardens, as well as discover works of art and period furniture. The tour will also offer an immersion into the cultural and creative richness of the UK, highlighting its historical ties with France, from the Bayeux Tapestry to the treasures of Sutton Hoo, to the contemporary expressions of its creative industry. Visitors will also have the opportunity to admire one of the last works by the British artist David Hockney, a major figure in contemporary art.

The Hotel de Charost is a private mansion located at 39 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in Paris, close to the Élysée Palace. Built in 1722 for Armand de Béthune, second duke of Charost and governor of Louis XV, it was designed by the architect Antoine Mazin. After being an aristocratic residence, it has known several prestigious uses, including as an imperial palace under Pauline Borghese, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, who bought it in 1803\. In 1814, it became the official residence of the UK ambassador to France, a position he still holds today. With its richly decorated lounges, English gardens and diplomatic history, the Hôtel de Charost is a strong symbol of Franco-British relations.
