Als er Maria Altmann trifft, ahnt ein junger Anwalt aus Los Angeles nicht, was ihn erwartet. Diese exzentrische Septenärnerin beauftragt sie mit einer ebenso ehrgeizigen wie unerwarteten Mission: ihr zu helfen, eines der berühmtesten Gemälde von Gustav Klimt zurückzubekommen, das im größten Museum Österreichs ausgestellt ist und das ihrer Familie gehörte.
Zunächst skeptisch, lässt sich der junge Anwalt von dieser liebenswerten alten Dame überzeugen. Sie erzählt ihm von ihrer gequälten Jugend, der Invasion der Nazis, der Enteignung der Werke ihrer Familie und ihrer Flucht in die Vereinigten Staaten.
Aber Österreich will die sogenannte "österreichische Mona Lisa" nicht zurückgeben. Mangels Rechtsmittel beschließen Maria Altmann und ihr Anwalt, die österreichische Regierung zu verklagen, um ihre Rechte geltend zu machen und sich an der Geschichte zu rächen.
Die Vorführung wird von einem Austausch mit Isabelle Rouge-Ducos gefolgt, der Paläographin Archivarin und leitende Denkmalpfleger bei der Mission zur Erforschung und Rückgabe der zwischen 1933 und 1945 geraubten Kulturgüter ist.

When he meets Maria Altmann, a young lawyer from Los Angeles is far from suspecting what awaits him. This eccentric septuagenarian entrusts her with an ambitious and unexpected mission: to help her recover one of the most famous paintings by Gustav Klimt, exhibited in the largest museum in Austria, which she claims belonged to her family.
At first skeptical, the young lawyer lets himself be convinced by this endearing old lady. She then tells him about her tormented youth, the Nazi invasion, the spoliation of her family’s works and her flight to the United States.
But Austria does not intend to restore the one nicknamed the "Austrian Mona Lisa". In the absence of an appeal, Maria Altmann and her lawyer decide to file a lawsuit against the Austrian government in order to assert their rights and take revenge on history.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Isabelle Rouge-Ducos, archivist paleographer and chief curator of heritage at the Mission for research and restitution of cultural property looted between 1933 and 1945.

Quando incontra Maria Altmann, un giovane avvocato di Los Angeles non sa cosa lo aspetta. Questa settecentesca eccentrica gli affida una missione tanto ambiziosa quanto inaspettata: aiutarla a recuperare uno dei quadri più famosi di Gustav Klimt, esposto nel più grande museo d'Austria, e che secondo lei apparteneva alla sua famiglia.
Inizialmente scettico, il giovane avvocato si lascia convincere da questa affascinante anziana signora. Gli racconta la sua gioventù tormentata, l'invasione nazista, la spoliazione delle opere della sua famiglia e la fuga verso gli Stati Uniti.
Ma l'Austria non intende restituire la cosiddetta "Gioconda austriaca". Mancando il ricorso, Maria Altmann e il suo avvocato decidono di intentare un processo al governo austriaco per far valere i loro diritti e vendicarsi della storia.
La proiezione sarà seguita da un momento di scambio con Isabelle Rouge-Ducos, archivista paleografa e conservatrice capo del patrimonio presso la Missione di ricerca e restituzione dei beni culturali sottratti tra il 1933 e il 1945.

Lorsqu’il rencontre Maria Altmann, un jeune avocat de Los Angeles est loin de se douter de ce qui l’attend. Cette septuagénaire excentrique lui confie une mission aussi ambitieuse qu’inattendue : l’aider à récupérer l’un des plus célèbres tableaux de Gustav Klimt, exposé dans le plus grand musée d’Autriche, et dont elle affirme qu’il appartenait à sa famille.
D’abord sceptique, le jeune avocat se laisse convaincre par cette attachante vieille dame. Elle lui raconte alors sa jeunesse tourmentée, l’invasion nazie, la spoliation des œuvres de sa famille et sa fuite vers les États-Unis.
Mais l’Autriche n’entend pas restituer celle que l’on surnomme la « Joconde autrichienne ». Faute de recours, Maria Altmann et son avocat décident d’intenter un procès au gouvernement autrichien afin de faire valoir leurs droits et de prendre leur revanche sur l’Histoire.
La projection sera suivie d’un temps d’échange avec Isabelle Rouge-Ducos, archiviste paléographe et conservatrice en chef du patrimoine à la Mission de recherche et de restitution des biens culturels spoliés entre 1933 et 1945.

Inicialmente escéptico, el joven abogado se deja convencer por esta encantadora anciana. Le cuenta su juventud atormentada, la invasión nazi, el despojo de las obras de su familia y su huida a los Estados Unidos.
Pero Austria no tiene intención de devolver la que se conoce como la "Mona Lisa austríaca". Sin recursos, Maria Altmann y su abogado deciden iniciar un proceso al gobierno austríaco para hacer valer sus derechos y vengarse de la historia.
La proyección será seguida de un tiempo de intercambio con Isabelle Rouge-Ducos, archivista paleografa y conservadora en jefe del patrimonio en la Misión de investigación y restitución de los bienes culturales expoliados entre 1933 y 1945.
