In the 13th century, on this site, was founded the bastide of Bretenoux. This castle was enlarged and restored until 1782\. A fire ravaged it in 1851\. The triangular plan includes a square body confined to its tops of round towers and flanked, on each of its long sides, by a horseshoe tower. It is protected by an enclosure that completely envelops it. Inside the square, the curtains are flanked by buildings set around a triangular courtyard. Dating from the 13th century, the square donjon stands on the southeast corner. The building of the Auditorium, considered to be the dungeon of the existing castrum in 1050, is backed by the south curtain. The 15th century chapel follows this building. In the 17th century, the castle was pierced with mullioned windows and the southern and eastern main buildings were doubled in length.
