The Garden of Palazzo Cocozza di Montanara in Caserta, in the medieval village of Piedimonte di Casolla, after a history that since 1500 saw it as a place of production of vegetable gardens and cultivation of hemp, assumed a landscape aspect when the Marquise Luisa Cocozza of Montanara at the beginning of 900 chose to intervene in the garden, imprinting the eclectic taste of the era and transforming the site into a valuable holiday resort. The water that flows and gushes throughout its extension is the springy texture that animates and illuminates this place with charm and grace, not so much as a completion but as a founding design of its origin. Ever since, coming from the Carolino aqueduct and passing through this garden, it was collected in a large tuff basin from which it would then branch off into eleven fountains, as it still does today. Rose garden ''Ronsard'' that the visual illusion seems to bring out from ancient cups of blue agapanti at the feet of orange trees, of oaks, of Phoenix Canariensis, of cedars and pines, pomegranates and flowering hedges, Artefacts of tuff, stones and friezes in the mixture of historical substrate into which the romantic Mediterranean garden is inserted and the contemporary reinterpretation of the English landscape architect Peter Curzon.
A slight formal base is beneath the garden which is accessed through the five terraced levels and the paths. The orange trees with various borders, Abelia, Anemone japonica and Leonotis leonurus of orange color, in the garden side by side to the beauty the sign of productive. The avenue of pomegranates just above is the dream, created as a collected space, sheltered to the eye by a topiary backdrop of Laurus nobilis and an eighteenth-century basin of white marble.
The garden was chosen by Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1970 as a setting for a novel by Boccaccio, 'Catherine and the nightingale', for the film 'Decameron'. He had appeared as an Eden suspended between eros and innocence.
