During the annexation, Metz was transformed under the action of the German authorities who decided to make its urbanism a showcase of the Wilhelmian empire. Designed by architect Ludwig Levy of Karlsruhe, the building was inaugurated in 1904, in the Wilhelmian era. Like the Nine Temple of Metz, the building is built in a Romanesque Revival style, but here very largely reinterpreted. The church is built of pink sandstone and Jaumont stone, a rare feature at a time when the choice of construction material was not innocuous. The size of the stones plays on the contrast between the rustic bossage of the limestone and the finesse of the will, as well as on the polychrome effect that results. The entrance door, with a large carved tympanum dominating a Christian figure, is surmounted by three semicircular bays.
