Die Hauptkirche von L'Aigle steht unter dem Patronat des großen Bischofs von TOURS, der 397 starb.
Das Gebäude bildet ein originelles, aber dennoch harmonisches Ensemble aus fünf Epochen. Seine Originalität liegt in der architektonischen Schichtung, die sie enthält: vom 11. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert hinterließ jede Periode eine Spur. Sie ist als historisches Denkmal klassifiziert.
Die Kirche wurde im 11. Jahrhundert von den Herren von L'Aigle gegründet. Aus dieser Zeit stammen der Uhrenturm und die Apsis. Im Jahr 1425 wurde die Rosenkranzkapelle erbaut, dann umgebaut und von 1494 bis 1499 in den Stil der Flamboyant-Gotik erweitert, um die Nordseite zu bilden, während gleichzeitig der große Turm errichtet wurde, dessen Erdgeschoss den ersten Abschnitt dieser Seitenwand bildete.
Von 1546 bis 1552 wurde die Kirche nach Süden in Form eines vom Rest des Gebäudes unabhängigen Seitenschiffs erweitert. Im Jahr 1567 wurde die Kirche geplündert und 1583 umgebaut. Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert gab es nur wenige Veränderungen. Das Altarbild wurde 1655 installiert. Während der Revolution wurde sie zum Tempel der Vernunft und des Höchsten Wesens, zu einem Versammlungsort und Lagerhaus.
Um 1890 ließ der Abt GONTIER die Fassaden der Kirche ändern, indem er ein Gewölbe aus hohlen Ziegeln am Kirchenschiff und am Chor errichten ließ und in der Kirche neugotische Möbel (Seitenaltäre, Kommunionstisch, Kronleuchter...) einbauen.
Im Jahr 1935 unternahm der Abt GIRARD umfangreiche Restaurierungsarbeiten an den Möbeln: Entfernung der neugotischen Elemente, Orgelausbau, Herstellung von Glasfenstern und Möbeln. Im Jahr 1944 wurde die Kirche von den Bombardierungen verschont, aber alle südlichen Fenster wurden zerstört.
Der Abt GIRARD beauftragte daraufhin Max INGAND mit einem umfangreichen Programm von Glasfenstern und beschloss, die leeren Baldachine der Südfassade mit Werken zeitgenössischer Künstler zu schmücken. Er wandte sich an BARILLET, Jean LAMBERT-RUCKI, der ebenfalls Statuen für das Innere der Kirche anfertigte, sowie an Paul CORNET, Hubert YENCESSE, Paul BELMONDO und Raymond MARTIN. Die Kirche verfügt daher derzeit über eine außergewöhnliche Sammlung von Werken aus der Zwischenkriegszeit.
Nach zwei Jahren der Arbeiten hat die Kirche Saint-Martin dank der Restaurierung ihrer Fassaden, des Süddaches und des Nebengebäudes ihren vollen Glanz wiedergefunden und so dieses bemerkenswerte Erbe bewahrt.

The main church of L'Aigle is under the patronage of the great Bishop of TOURS, who died in 397.
The building forms an original, yet harmonious whole, due to five eras. Its originality lies in the architectural stratification it contains: from the 11th to the 20th century, each period left a trace. It is classified as a historical monument.
The church was founded in the 11th century by the Lords of L'Aigle. From this period, dates the Clock Tower and the apse. In 1425, the chapel of the Rosary was built then transformed and enlarged from 1494 to 1499 in the flamboyant Gothic style to form the north side, at the same time as the large tower whose ground floor formed the first bay of this aisle.
From 1546 to 1552, the church was enlarged to the south in the form of a side nave independent of the rest of the building. In 1567, the church was ransacked and redeveloped in 1583. There were few changes in the 17th and 18th centuries. The altarpiece was installed in 1655. During the Revolution, it became the Temple of Reason and the Supreme Being, a meeting place and storehouse.
Around 1890, the abbot GONTIER modified the volumes of the church by building a hollow brick vault on the nave and the choir and installed in the church neo-Gothic furniture (side altars, communion table, chandelier...).
In 1935, Abbé GIRARD undertook major restoration work on the furniture: removal of neo-Gothic elements, arrangement of the organ, creation of stained glass windows and furniture. In 1944, the church was spared from bombing, but all the southern windows were destroyed.
Abbé GIRARD then commissioned a vast program of stained glass to Max INGAND and decided to decorate the empty canopies of the south facade with works by contemporary artists. He called upon BARILLET, Jean LAMBERT-RUCKI who also made statues for the interior of the church, to Paul CORNET, Hubert YENCESSE, Paul BELMONDO and Raymond MARTIN. The church thus currently has an exceptional set of works from the interwar period.
After two years of work, the church of Saint-Martin has regained all its brilliance thanks to the restoration of its facades, the south roof and the side aisle, thus preserving this remarkable heritage.

L'edificio forma un insieme originale, ma tuttavia armonioso, dovuto a cinque epoche. La sua originalità risiede nella stratificazione architettonica che racchiude: dall'XI al XX secolo, ogni periodo ha lasciato una traccia. È classificata come monumento storico.
La chiesa fu fondata nell'XI secolo dai signori dell'Aquila. Di quest'epoca datano la torre dell'orologio e l'abside. Nel 1425, la cappella del Rosario fu costruita e poi trasformata ed ampliata dal 1494 al 1499 in stile gotico-fiammingo per formare il lato nord, contemporaneamente alla costruzione della grande torre il cui piano terra costituiva la prima travatura di questo lato.
Dal 1546 al 1552, la chiesa si ampliò a sud sotto forma di una navata laterale indipendente dal resto dell'edificio. Nel 1567, la chiesa fu saccheggiata e riadattata nel 1583. Ci sono state poche modifiche nel XVII e XVIII secolo. Il retablo fu installato nel 1655. Durante la Rivoluzione divenne il Tempio della Ragione e dell'Essere Supremo, luogo di riunione e deposito.
Verso il 1890, l'abate GONTIER fece modificare i volumi della chiesa facendo costruire una volta di mattoni vuoti sulla navata e sul coro e installò nella chiesa un mobilio neogotico (altari laterali, tavolo di comunione, lampadario...).
Nel 1935, l'abate GIRARD intraprese importanti lavori di restauro del mobilio: soppressione degli elementi neogotici, sistemazione dell'organo, creazione di vetrate e mobili. Nel 1944 la chiesa fu risparmiata dai bombardamenti, ma tutte le vetrate a sud furono distrutte.
L'abate GIRARD commissionò quindi un vasto programma di vetrate a Max INGAND e decise di decorare i baldacchini vuoti della facciata sud con opere di artisti contemporanei. Fece appello a BARILLET, Jean LAMBERT-RUCKI che fece anche delle statue per l'interno della chiesa, a Paul CORNET, Hubert YENCESSE, Paul BELMONDO e Raymond MARTIN. La chiesa possiede quindi attualmente un insieme eccezionale di opere del periodo tra le due guerre.
Dopo due anni di lavori, la chiesa di Saint-Martin ha ritrovato tutto il suo splendore grazie al restauro delle facciate, del tetto sud e della parte inferiore, preservando così questo patrimonio notevole.

L'église principale de L'Aigle est placée sous le patronage du grand Evêque de TOURS, mort en 397.
L'édifice forme un ensemble original, mais cependant harmonieux, dû à cinq époques. Son originalité réside dans la stratification architecturale qu'elle renferme : du XIe au XXe siècle, chaque période a laissé une trace. Elle est classée Monument Historique.
L'église fut fondée au XIe siècle par les Seigneurs de L'Aigle. De cette époque, date la tour de l'Horloge et l'abside. En 1425, la chapelle du Rosaire fut construite puis transformée et agrandie de 1494 à 1499 dans le style gothique flamboyant pour former le côté nord, en même temps que l'on construisait la grosse tour dont le rez-de-chaussée forma la première travée de ce bas-côté.
De 1546 à 1552, l'église s'agrandi au sud sous la forme d'une nef latérale indépendante du restant de l'édifice. En 1567, l'église fut saccagée puis réaménagée en 1583. Il y eut peu de modifications au XVIIe siècle et XVIIIe siècle. Le retable fut installé en 1655. Pendant la Révolution, elle devint Temple de la Raison et de l'Etre Suprême, lieu de réunion et entrepôt.
Vers 1890, l'abbé GONTIER fit modifier les volumes de l'église en faisant construire une voûte en briques creuses sur la nef et le chœur et installa dans l'église un mobilier néo-gothique (autels latéraux, table de communion, lustre…).
En 1935, l'abbé GIRARD entrepris d'importants travaux de restauration du mobilier : suppression des éléments néo-gothiques, aménagement de l'orgue, création de vitraux et de mobilier. En 1944, l'église est épargnée par les bombardements, mais toutes les verrières sud furent détruites.
L'abbé GIRARD commanda alors un vaste programme de vitraux à Max INGAND et décida de garnir les baldaquins vides de la façade sud avec des œuvres d'artistes contemporains. Il fit appel à BARILLET, Jean LAMBERT-RUCKI qui fit également des statues pour l'intérieur de l'église, à Paul CORNET, Hubert YENCESSE, Paul BELMONDO et Raymond MARTIN. L'église possède donc actuellement un ensemble exceptionnel d'œuvres de l'entre-deux-guerres.
Après deux ans de travaux, l’église Saint-Martin a retrouvé tout son éclat grâce à la restauration de ses façades, de la toiture sud et du bas-côté, préservant ainsi ce patrimoine remarquable.

El edificio forma un conjunto original, pero sin embargo armonioso, debido a cinco épocas. Su originalidad reside en la estratificación arquitectónica que contiene: desde el siglo XI hasta el siglo XX, cada período ha dejado una huella. Está clasificada como monumento histórico.
La iglesia fue fundada en el siglo XI por los señores de L'Aigle. De esta época datan la torre del Reloj y el ábside. En 1425, la capilla del Rosario fue construida y luego transformada y ampliada de 1494 a 1499 en el estilo gótico flamígero para formar el lado norte, al mismo tiempo que se construía la gran torre cuya planta baja formaba la primera trona de este lado.
De 1546 a 1552, la iglesia se amplió hacia el sur en forma de una nave lateral independiente del resto del edificio. En 1567, la iglesia fue saqueada y reacondicionada en 1583. Hubo pocas modificaciones en los siglos XVII y XVIII. El retablo fue instalado en 1655. Durante la Revolución, se convirtió en Templo de la Razón y del Ser Supremo, lugar de reunión y almacén.
Hacia 1890, el abad GONTIER hizo modificar los volúmenes de la iglesia construyendo una bóveda de ladrillo hueca sobre la nave y el coro e instaló en la iglesia un mobiliario neogótico (altares laterales, mesa de comunión, lámpara...).
En 1935, el abad GIRARD emprendió importantes trabajos de restauración del mobiliario: supresión de los elementos neogóticos, acondicionamiento del órgano, creación de vidrieras y muebles. En 1944, la iglesia se salvó de los bombardeos, pero todas las ventanas del sur fueron destruidas.
El abad GIRARD encargó entonces un extenso programa de vidrieras a Max INGAND y decidió adornar los baldaquín vacíos de la fachada sur con obras de artistas contemporáneos. Recurrió a BARILLET, Jean LAMBERT-RUCKI que también hizo estatuas para el interior de la iglesia, a Paul CORNET, Hubert YENCESSE, Paul BELMONDO y Raymond MARTIN. La iglesia posee actualmente un conjunto excepcional de obras del período entre guerras.
Después de dos años de obras, la iglesia de San Martín ha recuperado todo su esplendor gracias a la restauración de sus fachadas, del tejado sur y del pazo, preservando así este patrimonio notable.
