The foundation of the parish dates back to the High Middle Ages where the habitat would have consisted only in simple "huts", origin of the name of the commune. It was created by the abbey of Condat (Saint-Claude) which established a priory there. In the 10th century, it passed into the hands of the abbey of Gigny, and in the 12th century, and this until the Revolution, it depends on the Lords of Chalon. In addition, under Louis XIII, Chavannes belonged to the Franche-Comté, but still spiritually dependent on the diocese of Lyon. It was in 1407 that Alix de Chalon, lady of Chavannes, asked the archbishop of Lyon, Philippe de Thurey, permission to build a collegiate chapel under the name of Saints Laurent, Georges and Antoine, by opening the north wall of the church of Saint-Stone that had just been built.
