How are contemporary artists responding to the climate crisis through moving images and time-based media? During this lecture, writer and curator Filipa Ramos will explore pioneering ecological approaches developed by artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds, examining how film, video, performance and installation address environmental transformations through duration, rhythm, movement and non-linear experiences of time. The lecture explores the relationship between ecology as a subject and ecology as an artistic practice, questioning how the temporal and material qualities of moving-image works can foster alternative ways of perceiving the living world and engaging with it. It also examines the environmental responsibilities associated with the production, presentation and distribution of these works, as well as the role that artists, art schools and cultural institutions can play in developing more environmentally responsible practices.

Comment les artistes contemporains réagissent-ils à la crise climatique à travers les images animées et les médias temporels ? Au cours de cette conférence, l’écrivaine et commissaire d’exposition Filipa Ramos abordera les approches écologiques pionnières développées par des artistes de différentes générations et origines culturelles, en examinant comment le cinéma, la vidéo, la performance et l’installation traitent des transformations environnementales à travers la durée, le rythme, le mouvement et les expériences non linéaires du temps. La conférence explore la relation entre l’écologie en tant que sujet et l’écologie en tant que pratique artistique, en s’interrogeant sur la manière dont les qualités temporelles et matérielles des œuvres d’images animées peuvent favoriser d’autres façons de percevoir le monde vivant et d’entrer en relation avec lui. Elle examine également les responsabilités environnementales liées à la production, à la présentation et à la diffusion de ces œuvres, ainsi que le rôle que les artistes, les écoles d’art et les institutions culturelles peuvent jouer dans le développement de pratiques plus respectueuses de l’environnement.

Hoe reageren hedendaagse kunstenaars op de klimaatcrisis via bewegende beelden en tijdgebonden media? Tijdens deze lezing gaat schrijfster en tentoonstellingscurator Filipa Ramos in op de baanbrekende ecologische benaderingen die zijn ontwikkeld door kunstenaars van verschillende generaties en culturele achtergronden. Ze onderzoekt hoe film, video, performance en installaties omgaan met ecologische veranderingen door middel van duur, ritme, beweging en niet-lineaire tijdservaringen. De lezing onderzoekt de relatie tussen ecologie als onderwerp en ecologie als artistieke praktijk, en gaat in op de manier waarop de temporele en materiële kwaliteiten van bewegende-beeldenwerken andere manieren kunnen bevorderen om de levende wereld waar te nemen en er een relatie mee aan te gaan. Tevens worden de milieuverantwoordelijkheden onderzocht die gepaard gaan met de productie, presentatie en verspreiding van deze werken, evenals de rol die kunstenaars, kunstacademies en culturele instellingen kunnen spelen bij de ontwikkeling van milieuvriendelijkere werkwijzen.
