About the location

Maison-Dieu de Mormant
Rue de l'Abbaye, 52210 Leffonds
  • Haute-Marne
  • Grand Est
The House-God of Mormant, established during the First Crusade by Hugues Bardoul II of Broyes-Châteauvillain, is originally a hospital-church path, welcoming pilgrims and poor. Successively in the hands of the Templars and then the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, the site experienced periods of decline and reconstruction. Transformed into an agricultural centre in the 15th century, it declined after the troubles of the 16th and 17th centuries and its buildings were sold as a national property during the Revolution. Despite this, Mormant remains a major site in the history of road hospitals in France.
