This discovery exhibition proposes some original works (sculptures, engravings, books, stamps) and commented images of the most famous portraits of Diderot, made during his lifetime then in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Discover how Houdon, Rodin, Bartholdi, Picasso and many others imagined the philosopher. Realistically or heroically, intimately or socially, in dialogue or doubt, strong or fragile… , Diderot was imagined differently. Each representation tells a story: how the greatest artists imagined Diderot, how Diderot reacted to his own portraits, as the posterity of the great man is embodied over the centuries in painting, sculpture, engraving, stamps… to this day. Between physical and psychological portraits, the images of Diderot have contributed to build our collective imagination of the philosopher. Exceptional loan of a work by Auguste Rodin For five months from 13 May and in connection with the Diderot exhibition imagined, the House of Lights welcomes, in an exceptional way, a sculpture by Auguste Rodin representing Denis Diderot. Unveiled to the public for the first time since its creation in 1884, this original work reveals how one of the greatest sculptors of the 19th century represented one of the greatest thinkers of the 18th century.
