Museum dedicated to the adventures of the great navigator-explorer of the Pacific, Jean François de Galaup, Count of Lapérouse, born in Albi in 1741 at the Château du Gô. He became a sailor at the age of 15 and fought for a long time against the English forces in India and America before being promoted to Captain. In 1785, he led the scientific expedition around the world, at the request of Louis XVI, the famous frigates the Compass and the Astrolabe. After a stopover at Botany Bay (Australia) in early 1788, the crew disappeared. It took almost 40 years for Peter Dillon and then, a few months later, Dumont d'Urville, to find the remains of the shipwreck on the island of Vanikoro (Solomon Islands) and collect the stories of the natives. The museum exhibits models, navigational instruments, weapons and uniforms, many remains found on the scene of the sinking.
