About the location

Ancienne chapelle Sainte-Paix
Rue du Marais, 14000 Caen
  • Calvados
  • Normandie
Romanesque chapel restored in the 20th century. Built in 1061 by William, Duke of Normandy, to commemorate the Truce of God, proclaimed at the Provincial Council of Rouen in 1047\. The development of this little-known Romanesque monument (located on Rue du Marais, next to the SNCF train station), is part of the hidden ducal heritage of the city of Caen. The remains of the chapel sold to the Revolution as national property were integrated in 1837 into a gas factory. Damaged in 1944 by the bombings that destroyed the station district, it was restored in the 1970s but is not open to the public outside heritage days. The 11th century sculpture is of major interest in relation to that of the Abbaye aux Dames. Chapelle Sainte-Paix
