From September 12 to December 12, Les Dominicaines, Espace culturel & Artothèque will present the exhibition "Éric Liot, Sculptures".
Since 1991, in his studio Eric Liot has constantly recreated a world that swarms, a colorful, carefree and provocative society. He told us so many stories, made us share so many of his imaginary journeys. He does not feel the soul of a political or philosophical messenger, but lets himself be carried by the plastic sense of his environment. In each of his works, we find different techniques: painting, stencil, collage and marouflage, accumulation of objects recovered during journeys and superposition of materials. Its technique is unique and wood has always been its preferred material.
He works all kinds of wood that he collects, cuts, sanders and screws. His creations are neither cut nor modelled but built according to his own paths. Everything is a matter of construction, of juxtaposition. Eric Liot often addresses the theme of ecology, travel and also speaks about the way we live, our consumer society. The work of art echoes a cultural context of creation. Ecology and the way we treat the planet is an important subject for him. We find in his work many representations of the world map, of our planet, of nature. His work is part of a relationship with the world.
From now on we come out of the lush jungle of consumption, of the abundance of goods, of symbols. A new era opens up for us. Installed half-time for several years in Les Cyclades, it is there that he transforms his way of working. The use of the materials of recovery, pushes him to launch in the sculpture on foot. The sculpture requires all the physical and intellectual means, a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of patience. The artist thus chooses to confront the real, to confront the laws of gravity, balance, and strength of the material. Eric Liot seeks to transcribe his art, his imagination, through his sculptures carried by the influence of Ancient Greece. He was literally caught up in Greek mythology. The Homeric stories and heroic, triumphant or tragic exploits lead to the imagination.
But it moves very naturally away from the classical form and proposes a personal and contemporary interpretation of Greek Hellenistic art. He creates his sculptures with his technique of assembling wood and already existing objects. The goal is to give a representation between abstraction and figuration by the schematization of forms. He is concerned about proportions, balance and idealized perfection. The abstract leaves more room for the imagination. This instinctive approach is directly linked to the creative process. It seeks to restore the emotion that can be had in a classical work. The assembly of existing elements is naturally shaped. The look of its silhouettes is raw. Monochromy imposes its simplicity. He invented archaeology and made new excavations. He reinvented pieces of history. He diverts the objects of antiquity, he amuses himself and imagines a contemporary life to these heroes. He embeds modern objects in these imaginary antiques.
