About the location

Hôtel des douanes
1 quai de la douane, 33000 Bordeaux
  • Gironde
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Originally called «Hôtel des Fermes du Roi», the building was designed specifically to accommodate the general farm, private company, ancestor of customs under the Ancien Régime, which levied on behalf of the king duties and taxes on goods. The building still houses the interregional Customs Directorate of Bordeaux.
This building is part of the large ordered set of the Place de la Bourse, initially "Place Royale", whose construction was launched under the stewardship of Claude Boucher to serve as a backdrop for the equestrian statue of King Louis XV. The design of the facades was entrusted to Jacques Gabriel, the king’s architect, who will begin with the Hôtel des Douanes, built between 1735 and 1738\. After his death in 1742, his son Ange-Jacques Gabriel completed the square with the Palais de la Bourse in the north, built between 1742 and 1749, and which is the symmetrical replica of the Hôtel des Douanes.
In 1984, the Customs institution decided to install the first National Customs
