Access to the archaeological site under the square, close but independent of the Basilica of Saint-Seurin, allows you to discover a glimpse of the paleochristian necropolis, which makes the site of Saint-Seurin one of the most important funerary sites in south-west France. Saint-Seurin is the oldest witness of the history of Bordeaux after the Palais-Gallien. In the same way as the historic crypt under the basilica, the archaeological site has many sarcophagi.
Antiquity is present in the heart of the city through the remains of the first Christian cemetery of Bordeaux which remained in function for nearly fourteen centuries. We can only see part of it today because the place of the Martyrs of the Resistance covers the rest.
The first excavations began in 1910 under the authority of the Bordeaux historian Paul Courteault. They continued in the sixties.
Among other archaeological curiosities, the excavations revealed stone structures, an ancient funerary enclosure, mausoleums, frescoes, amphorae in which were buried children, tombs under tiles and sarcophagi made of limestone and marble.
