Geboren 1942 in Nagoya, Japan, kam Kunié Sugiura 1963 in die USA, um an der School of the Art Institute of Chicago zu studieren, wo sie sich auf Fotografie spezialisierte. Nach ihrem Abschluss zog sie nach New York, wo sie seitdem lebt und arbeitet.
Sugiuras Praxis zeichnet sich durch einen hybriden Ansatz aus, der mehrere Medien kombiniert und seine bkulturelle Identität widerspiegelt. Das Gleichgewicht der Dualismen - japanisch/amerikanisch, organisch/künstlich, Malerei/Fotografie - durchzieht sein gesamtes Werk. Curated by Japanese art critic Ryo Sawayama, the exhibition Ubiquitous Conjunction will bring together key works spanning more than six decades of Sugiura’s practice, from her earliest experiments to recent productions. An accompanying essay on the artist’s work will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.
Born in Japan, Sugiura moved to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she first encountered photography as a medium and began developing her artistic practice. After graduating, she settled in New York in 1967, where she has remained ever since. In 2025, SFMOMA presented the first major survey of her work in the United States, tracing more than sixty years of artistic production.
Working across photography, painting, and sculpture, Sugiura has continually challenged the boundaries of the photographic medium. Her practice creates unexpected conjunctions between image and object, surface and material, memory and perception, bringing together disparate temporalities and forms within a singular visual language.
Through darkroom experimentation, montage, solarization, and photograms, Sugiura extends the experimental legacy of early photography while anticipating the expanded field of contemporary photographic practice. Her work occupies a unique position between the historical avant-garde and contemporary art, revealing photography as both a material process and a conceptual space.

Nata a Nagoya, in Giappone, nel 1942, Kunié Sugiura arriva negli Stati Uniti nel 1963 per studiare alla School of the Art Institute of Chicago, dove si specializza in fotografia. Dopo la laurea, si trasferisce a New York, dove vive e lavora da allora.

Curatée par le critique d’art japonais Ryo Sawayama, l’exposition Ubiquitous Conjunction réunira des œuvres majeures couvrant plus de six décennies de la pratique de Sugiura, de ses premières expérimentations à ses productions les plus récentes. Un essai consacré au travail de l’artiste sera également publié à l’occasion de l’exposition.
Née au Japon, Sugiura s’installe aux États-Unis en 1963 pour étudier à la School of the Art Institute of Chicago, où elle découvre pour la première fois la photographie en tant que médium et commence à développer sa pratique artistique. Après l’obtention de son diplôme, elle s’établit à New York en 1967, où elle vit et travaille depuis. En 2025, le SFMOMA lui a consacré la première grande rétrospective de son œuvre aux États-Unis, retraçant plus de soixante années de création artistique.
À travers la photographie, la peinture et la sculpture, Sugiura n’a cessé de repousser les limites du médium photographique. Sa pratique crée des rapprochements inattendus entre l’image et l’objet, la surface et la matière, la mémoire et la perception, réunissant au sein d’un langage visuel singulier des temporalités et des formes hétérogènes.
Par ses expérimentations en chambre noire, le montage, la solarisation et les photogrammes, Sugiura prolonge l’héritage expérimental des débuts de la photographie tout en anticipant l’élargissement du champ de la pratique photographique contemporaine. Son œuvre occupe une position singulière entre l’avant-garde historique et l’art contemporain, révélant la photographie à la fois comme un processus matériel et comme un espace conceptuel.
