STRUTTED ABOUT / Nicolas Derné: Research(Search) and photographic creation (Residences and Exhibition(Exposure))
STRUTTED ABOUT is a research project and project of photographic creation of the artist Nicolas Derné exploring the symbolic reappropriation which is made of the carnival across the Caribbean.
The carnival, ground of popular expression and of contrepouvoir, establishes(constitutes) a chronotope in the sense(direction) of time(weather) stacked(superimposed) in a space (the street). It is a specific reading of this ephemeral societal organisation, mirror of our history(story) and of our contemporaneousness which the artist wishes to propose by this photographic project.
In the French Antilles and in the Caribbean in general, the carnival is introduced by the European colonizers and always has a very important place(square) in the life of the city(estate).
The Artist wishes to carry a look non-stereotyped on different influence comment colonial (Hispanic, Anglo-Saxon and French) of carnivals the mixture of which with local and Africain cultures trains(forms) the clean(appropriate) identities of these islands.
Since 2011, Nicolas Derné develops a black and white photographic corpus on the carnival of Martinique. To explore other Caribbean carnivals establishes(constitutes) a key stage in its approach(initiative) today.
This project will take place in two phases:
- The realisation of 4 short residences in the Caribbean between January, 2018 and February, 2019:
January, 2018 in Guadeloupe
February, 2018 to Trinidad
July, 2018 in Cuba
February, 2019 in Dominican Republic
An exhibition(exposure) in 2019 national stage of which Tropics Atrium will assure(insure) production and that has authority to circulate(run) in other places and country of the Caribbean and beyond.
Project will also give rise to an edition(publishing) which will make intercede other artists, sociologists and historians who will write in echo with these photographies.
