About the location

Collégiale Saint-Salvi
Rue Mariès, 81000 Albi
  • Tarn
  • Occitanie
The collegiate church of Saint-Salvi, named after the 1st bishop of the city of Albi in the 6th century, has stood proudly since the 11th century, located at the corner of Place Sainte-Cécile. This church is one of the largest Romanesque churches in the Albigensian.
As early as the 11th century, the foundations of a white stone church were laid at the presumed site of Saint Salvi’s tomb. The mixture of stones and bricks coincides with the change of materials of the thirteenth century. It is possible to read directly on the building the various architectural phases and the passage from Romanesque to Gothic. In the church, six large canvases offered by the consuls of Albi in 1725 recount the life of Saint-Salvi and the history of the city. At the back of the church, under the Moucherel organ, a set of sculptures on a human scale, "the Christ with Links", are surprising in detail and colour.
