Born in Albi, Gô, on 23 August 1741, Jean-François de Galaup, Count of Lapérouse, became a sailor at the age of 15. He fought the English forces in India and America before being promoted to captain.
In 1785, at the request of Louis XVI, he led a cartographic and scientific expedition around the world aboard the famous frigates La Boussole and L'Astrolabe. After a stopover at Botany Bay, Australia, the two ships disappeared in 1788 to Vanikoro, Solomon Islands.
It was not until forty years later that the Irish captain Peter Dillon, and then a few months later, the Frenchman Dumont d'Urville, found on the island of Vanikoro the remains of the shipwreck and gathered stories from the inhabitants.
The museum dedicated to Lapérouse traces the journey step by step, from Brest to Australia. In 1785, 225 men, sailors, scientists and artists, left Brest and notably followed the coasts of Brazil, Chile, Alaska, California, China, Russia and Australia.
The museum presents models, navigation instruments, weapons, uniforms and many remains found at the site of the shipwreck.
The Musée Lapérouse does not only tell a man’s story. It evokes a great page of the maritime history of the end of the 18th century and invites the public to discover the mysteries that still remain around this expedition.

Formerly developed, the hydraulic site of the pasta factory of Albi, or Moulins Albigeois, occupies the foundations of a flour mill likely to date from the 12th century, attached to a roadway operated since the Middle Ages. Transformed in the 17th century with the construction of the Hôtel de la Vache rouge (rue Porta), the site was remodelled between 1703 and 1739, increased in the following years (large buildings, along the old lane of Rives), further increased in 1828 (wheat store, with date range), and transformed into a pasta factory, with the construction in 1850 of the vermicellaire proper. Archetype of the brick constructions of the 19th century, the factory is in the colors of the city (technical prowess of the balconies). She deployed her equipment and machines on several floors. Since the cessation of activity, the factory has been rehabilitated (hotel, museum) and partially furnished.
