Abstract
Improving the survival of patients with poor prognosis cancers has been identified as one of the research priorities in the 10-year strategic plan of the French National Cancer Institute (www.e-cancer.fr). Research activities in the team PLATON focuses on gastro-intestinal (GI) and hepatobiliary cancers, which exhibit poor prognosis, notably as a result of a late diagnosis, limited efficacy of treatments and frequent relapse. The team covers this issue by studying molecular determinants of inflammation and cell plasticity that contribute to cancer progression, drug resistance and relapse. These determinants may represent clinically relevant biomarkers and/or therapeutic target candidates. The activities of the clinicians from the team align with this strategy to create a continuum from basic to clinical investigations allowing a critical evaluation of these candidates.
