40 years of geological heritage: current situation and outlook
In 1985, in Brittany, at the general meeting of the young Conférence Permanente des Réserves Naturelles (CPRN, now RNF), the first 6 members met with the intuition that it was necessary to mobilise around the notion of geological heritage.
RNF's "geological heritage" commission was created the following year. Its pioneering work has been essential, resulting in particular in the project for a national inventory and a methodology (1995).
The concept of geological heritage was incorporated into our legislative corpus as an integral part of natural heritage, with the law of February 2002, which initiated a National Inventory of Natural Heritage (INPN) placed under the scientific validity of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN). In 2007, the Ministry launched the National Inventory of Geological Heritage (INPG).
More than 10 years after the 5 National Geological Heritage Days held in Caen in 2013, the time has come to take stock of the experiences and results of the work carried out in all the regions, within the RNF network and beyond, by all the players involved.

En 1985, en Bretagne, à l’occasion de l’assemblée générale de la jeune Conférence Permanente des Réserves Naturelles (CPRN, aujourd’hui RNF) se réunissaient les 6 premiers membres ayant l’intuition qu’il fallait se mobiliser sur la notion de patrimoine géologique.
La commission « patrimoine géologique » de RNF était créée l’année suivante. Son travail historique pionnier a été essentiel ; il en est résulté notamment le projet d’un inventaire national et une méthodologie (1995).
La notion de patrimoine géologique intègre notre corpus législatif comme partie intégrante du patrimoine naturel, avec la loi de février 2002 qui initie un Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel (INPN) placé sous la validité scientifique du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN). En 2007, le ministère lance l’Inventaire National du Patrimoine Géologique (INPG).
Plus de 10 ans après les 5 Journées Nationales du Patrimoine Géologique qui se sont tenues à Caen en 2013, l’heure nous semble venue de faire un point sur les expériences et les résultats des travaux menés dans toutes les régions, au sein du réseau RNF et au-delà, par l’ensemble des acteurs mobilisés.
