In The Sounds of Recife, Kleber Mendonça Filho transforms a "quiet" street of the Brazilian middle class into a real resonance chamber: everyday noises, silences, rumors, tensions... everything becomes a matter of cinema. Both an urban chronic and a social thriller, the film observes how fear, private security, and class relations settle in bodies and buildings—to the point of shaking the apparent balance.
The staging is of a formidable precision, often funny, sometimes disturbing: a falling leaf can rub shoulders with an accident in the distance, and the sound becomes a full-fledged character. Result: a modern, clairvoyant, and absolutely captivating film—considered one of the great contemporary Brazilian films.
To (re)discover, after the screening, the exchange with Gustavo Jahn and Vinicius Gonçalves Carneiro will extend the session: making of the film, place of sound, social and political reading of the narrative... and questions from the audience.

Dans Les Bruits de Recife, Kleber Mendonça Filho transforme une rue “tranquille” de la classe moyenne brésilienne en véritable caisse de résonance : bruits du quotidien, silences, rumeurs, tensions… tout devient matière de cinéma. À la fois chronique urbaine et thriller social, le film observe comment la peur, la sécurité privée et les rapports de classe s’installent dans les corps et dans les immeubles — jusqu’à faire vaciller l’équilibre apparent.
La mise en scène est d’une précision redoutable, souvent drôle, parfois inquiétante : une feuille qui tombe peut côtoyer un accident au loin, et le son devient un personnage à part entière. Résultat : un film moderne, clairvoyant, et absolument captivant — considéré comme l’un des grands films brésiliens contemporains.

Screening gevolgd door een uitwisseling met Gustavo Jahn (acteur) en Vinicius Gonçalves Carneiro (ERSO – Universiteit van Lille).
In de geluiden van Recife transformeert Kleber Mendonça Filho een "rustige" straat van de Braziliaanse middenklasse in een echt klankbord: Alledaagse geluiden, stiltes, geruchten, spanningen… alles wordt een kwestie van cinema. De film is zowel een stedelijke kroniek als een sociale thriller en ziet hoe angst, particuliere veiligheid en klassenrelaties zich vestigen in lichamen en gebouwen – zelfs wankelen de schijnbare balans.
De enscenering is van enorme precisie, vaak grappig, soms zorgwekkend: Een vallend blad kan schouders wrijven met een ongeluk in de verte, en het geluid wordt een personage op zich. Het resultaat: Een moderne, vooruitziende en absoluut boeiende film — beschouwd als een van de grote hedendaagse Braziliaanse films.
