The garden, since its origins developed 'on the coast' on several levels climbed on the side of the hill of Castelletto, suffered during the eighteenth century, along with the Palace, a substantial change in the plan of the courtyard and the first terrace.
Comparing the plans of the Rubens and the Gauthier, it is clear that the space of the courtyard has been enlarged in a spectacular way, obtained by breaking up and moving back the wall containing the first level of the garden, and thus giving more breath to the seabed that will then host the nymphaeum. Similar operations were carried out in the same years in other private residences of the city, in Strada Nuova, as well as in Strada Balbi.
