“Many works have the merit of engaging an audience at all times, especially when they shake up the codes of society. The Revolt, through the voice of its author, has everything of a manifesto against the power of man over woman in the 19th century. We can even consider this text as a feminist plea, written by a man, sensitive to the place of women in a bourgeois society with discriminating principles. » Philippe Lüscher
A play written between 1868 and 1869 by Auguste de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, La Révolte is a bourgeois drama in a single act in which an idealistic wife announces one evening to her husband, whose fortune she has made, that she leaves, revealing to him that she can no longer support the logic of profitability and the worship of money. However, nourishing contradictory feelings – by turns submissive, mocking, lyrical, melancholic, rebellious, desperate – Elisabeth realizes her impossible dream.
Violently clashing with the ideology of the ruling class due to its scathing irony, the work disappeared from the poster after five performances at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in 1870. Included in the repertoire of the Comédie Française in 1903, the play was revived a few times in Paris, then at the Théâtre du Caveau in March 1985, Philippe Lüscher thus signing one of his first productions. 40 years later, he found this text which resonates even more today, highlighting the attempted revolt of an intelligent and sensitive woman in a materialist society.
