While rehearsing the role of Hecuba, who lost everything during the Trojan War, actress Nadia is fighting her own battle. Her autistic son was the victim of abuse at a specialised institution. As rehearsals progress, so does the ongoing investigation.
The play moves between theatre and courtroom, with the same actors playing both Euripides' characters and the parties involved in the legal case — alongside the Prosecutor and the Defence Lawyer, a Secretary of State, a care worker, or a former employee of the care home.
Drawing on a recent news story from Switzerland that became a state scandal, Tiago Rodrigues weaves together the universal struggles of a 21st-century woman and an ancient heroine. Both were betrayed by those they entrusted with their child: a friend and ally for Hecuba, a public institution for Nadia. These two mirrored stories give voice to a powerful female presence, a symbol of an eternal fight for justice. Author and director Tiago Rodrigues, director of the Festival d'Avignon, offers a deeply humane piece of theatre, where fiction gives meaning to our own concerns.
