Voices of the Rainforest: A Day in the Life of Bosavi is a 70-minute cinema concert–an experiential documentary about the ecological and aesthetic coevolution of Papua New Guinea's Bosavi rainforest region and its inhabitants. Through sound and image, the film immerses viewers in the rainforest, and makes audible myriad connections between the everyday sounds of the rainforest biosphere and the creative practices of singing to, with, and about it by the Bosavi people. Structured around a day in the life of the rainforest and the music it inspires for the Bosavi people, the film brings to life the everyday activities of work, leisure, and ritual–heard in the full ambient setting of the rainforest–throughout the day and night.
Voices of the Rainforest was produced by Steven Feld and Dennis Leonard and Directed by Steven Feld and Jeremiah Ra Richards in collaboration with the Bona community of Bosavi, Papua New Guinea. Feld conducted anthropological and ethnomusicological fieldwork in Bosavi from 1975 to 2000. The original Voices of the Rainforest CD was produced during this time (1991) with production support from Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. Working with acclaimed sound editor Dennis Leonard at Skywalker Sound in 2016-2017, Feld recomposed a 25th anniversary 7.1 Voices soundtrack. A 2018 return to Bosavi with filmmaker Jeremiah Ra Richards and digitization of Feld's extensive archival photographs led to the creation of the immersive film joined to the 7.1 soundtrack.
Steven Feld is a musician, sound artist, photographer and filmmaker, and Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Music at the University of New Mexico. His award-winning books, CDs and films include Sound and Sentiment and Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra; his CDs and films include Bosavi: Rainforest Music of Papua New Guinea, Voices of the Rainforest and Por Por: Honk Horn Music of Ghana. His most recent projects include the CD Horn to Horn: The La Drivers Union Por Por Group Meet The Texas Horns (VoxLox) and the book La recherche comme composition (Les Presses du Réel, small collection ArTeC.)

«Voices of the Rainforest: A Day in the Life of Bosavi» est un ciné-concert de 70 minutes - un documentaire expérientiel sur la coévolution écologique et esthétique de la région de la forêt tropicale de Bosavi en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée et de ses habitant-e-s. À travers le son et l'image, le film plonge les spectateurs et les spectatrices dans la forêt tropicale et établit une myriade de liens audibles entre les sons quotidiens de la biosphère de la forêt tropicale et les pratiques créatives de chant pour, avec et à son sujet par le peuple Bosavi. Structuré autour d'une journée dans la vie de la forêt tropicale et de la musique qu'elle inspire au peuple Bosavi, le film donne vie aux activités quotidiennes du travail, des loisirs et des rituels - entendus dans le cadre ambiant de la forêt tropicale - tout au long de la journée et nuit.
«Voices of the Rainforest» a été produit par Steven Feld et Dennis Leonard et réalisé par Steven Feld et Jeremiah Ra Richards en collaboration avec la communauté Bona de Bosavi, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Steven Feld a mené des recherches anthropologiques et ethnomusicologiques sur le terrain à Bosavi de 1975 à 2000. Le CD original «Voices of the Rainforest» a été produit à cette époque (1991) avec l'aide du batteur du Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart. En 2016-2017, en collaboration avec le célèbre monteur sonore Dennis Leonard de Skywalker Sound, Feld a recomposé une bande sonore 7.1 pour le 25e anniversaire de Voices. En 2018, un retour à Bosavi avec le cinéaste Jeremiah Ra Richards et la numérisation des nombreuses photographies d'archives de Feld ont conduit à la création du film immersif joint à la bande-son 7.1.
Steven Feld est musicien, artiste sonore, photographe et cinéaste et professeur émérite d'anthropologie et de musique à l'Université du Nouveau-Mexique.
