On the occasion of the BiblioWeekend 2023, a weekend dedicated to libraries throughout Switzerland, whose theme is "Setting Sail", the film Thy Womb by Brillante Ma Mendoza is being screened in the MEG auditorium. This year at the MEG, various events highlight the Sama people (Southeast Asia), the dominant ethnic group of the Tawi-Tawi islands in the Philippines.
Shaleha Sarail hails from a water-village in Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi. The province is a seaweed producing area in the southernmost part of the Philippines down to the Malaysian and Indonesian archipelagos.
A woman of mature years, experiencing a 3rd miscarriage, Shaleha agonizes that she can’t bear a child. Though an adoptive parent to her nephew, she still feels that her husband Bangas An desires to be a father.
To fulfill her husband’s only wish and to be blessed by Allah as having a child is atangible proof of divine grace, Shaleha decides to march to a different drummer. Her resolve is to find a new partner for her husband. Night and day, she and her husband sail island, floating-village, and nearby communities in search of a fertile woman.
As a film, Thy Womb reflect Tawi-tawi’s apparent state: geographically stunning but socio-politically wanting.

A l'occasion du BiblioWeekend 2023, un week-end consacré aux bibliothèques dans toute la Suisse, dont la thématique est «Mettre les voiles», le film Thy Womb de Brillante Ma Mendoza est projeté dans l'auditorium du MEG. Cette année au MEG, différents événements mettent la lumière sur le peuple Sama (Asie du Sud-Est), groupe ethnique dominant des îles de Tawi-Tawi, aux Philippines.
Shaleha Sarail est originaire d'un village sur pilotis à Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi, aux Philippines. Cette province est une zone de production d'algues marines dans la partie la plus méridionale des Philippines jusqu'aux archipels malaisien et indonésien.
Femme d'âge mûr, ayant fait une troisième fausse couche, Shaleha se désole de ne pouvoir porter un enfant. Bien qu'elle ait adopté son neveu, elle a toujours l'impression que son mari, Bangas An, désire être père.
Pour réaliser le seul souhait de son mari et être bénie par Allah, car avoir un enfant est une preuve tangible de la grâce divine, Shaleha décide de tenter une nouvelle stratégie.
Sa résolution est de trouver une nouvelle partenaire pour son mari. Jour et nuit, elle et son mari parcourent l'île, le village sur pilotis et les communautés voisines à la recherche d'une femme fertile.
A travers cette histoire, ce film reflète l'état apparent de Tawi-tawi : géographiquement stupéfiante mais sociopolitiquement insuffisante.
