Descartes' animal-machine and its consequences

Descartes introduced the notion of "animal-machine", in contrast to other conceptions considering the animal as a "sentient being". Even if this notion, very controversial from the outset, has led to advances in biological research, it has also had negative effects on the treatment of animals by humans. Today, even if living organisms are still considered physical systems, the sensitivity of animals is increasingly recognized and we strive to no longer reduce them to mere machines.
Georges Chapouthier (researcher emeritus at the CNRS, neurobiologist and philosopher) in dialogue with Franck Dion, creator of the exhibition, propose an exchange around this notion and its consequences on our society.

Descartes a introduit la notion d’« animal-machine », face à d’autres conceptions considérant l’animal comme un « être sensible ». Même si cette notion, très controversée dès sa formulation, a permis des avancées en recherche biologique, elle a aussi eu des effets négatifs sur le traitement des animaux par l’homme. Aujourd’hui, même si les organismes vivants restent considérés comme des systèmes physiques, la sensibilité des animaux est davantage reconnue et nous nous efforçons de ne plus les réduire à de simples machines.
Georges Chapouthier (chercheur émérite au CNRS, neurobiologiste et philosophe) en dialogue avec Franck Dion, créateur de l’exposition, nous proposent un échange autour de cette notion et ses conséquences sur notre société.

Descartes introduceerde het begrip "diermachine", in vergelijking met andere opvattingen van het dier als "sentient wezen". Hoewel dit begrip, dat sinds zijn formulering zeer omstreden was, vooruitgang in biologisch onderzoek mogelijk heeft gemaakt, heeft het ook negatieve gevolgen gehad voor de behandeling van dieren door mensen. Vandaag de dag, zelfs als levende organismen nog steeds als fysieke systemen worden beschouwd, wordt de gevoeligheid van dieren meer algemeen erkend en streven we ernaar om ze niet langer te reduceren tot louter machines.
Georges Chapouthier (Emeritus onderzoeker bij de CNRS, neurobioloog en filosoof) stelt in dialoog met Franck Dion, de maker van de tentoonstelling, een uitwisseling voor rond dit begrip en de gevolgen ervan voor onze samenleving.
