Die Stadtkugel ist eng mit der Schiffbaugeschichte der Metropole verbunden.
Die Legende besagt, dass die Seeleute in den Schiffsschächten mit Kugeln spielten und das gewölbte Profil des Spielplatzes inspirierten.
Seit 2012 steht dieses Spiel im Verzeichnis des immateriellen Kulturerbes in Frankreich und wird derzeit von der UNESCO anerkannt.
