While the Zône non aedificandi (non constructible space) was supposed not to accommodate inhabitants, it was populated and participated in the population growth of the municipalities bordering the capital. Starting from the case of Pré-Saint-Gervais, Isabelle Backouche evokes the life of zoniers and their disappearance in the 20th century.
