Die ersten Befestigungen von Montmédy werden unter Charles Quint 1545 gebaut. Sie werden bis XVII. Jahrhundert im Laufe des spanischen Besitzes entwickelt werden. Die Zitadelle, die von Jean V d' Allamont geschützt ist, im Juni 1657 beauftragt, wird, in Anwesenheit vom Jugendlichen Ludwig XIV und aus Mazarin, im August 1657 von Vauban genommen, der seinen ersten Sitz da leitet. Vauban wird da dann Änderungen, dann Séré de Rivières, ab 1870 bringen.
