Kalligraphie, schöne Schrift ist die Kunst, die Handschrift gut zu formen.
Im Westen war die Kunst der Mönche Kopisten, aber auch der großen Kalligraphen darauf ausgerichtet, zum Prestige der Herrscher und der Aristokratie beizutragen. Eine Forschungsarbeit für eine perfekte Kreation, die vor allem dem Ruhm ihrer Auftraggeber diente. Der Begriff der rein "ästhetischen" Kalligraphie ist jüngeren Datums und stammt größtenteils aus der Gegenwart.
Kalligraphische Kunst wurde seit Jahrhunderten in vielen Kulturen wie dem Nahen Osten und dem Fernen Osten mit spezifischen und traditionellen Techniken entwickelt.

Un lavoro di ricerca per una creazione perfetta che serviva prima di tutto la gloria dei loro committenti. La nozione di calligrafia puramente "estetica" è più recente e data in gran parte dell'epoca contemporanea.
L'arte calligrafica è stata sviluppata per secoli in molte culture come il Medio Oriente e l'Estremo Oriente con tecniche di realizzazione specifiche e proprie di ogni tradizione.
