This panel discussion brings literature and painting into dialogue around Ferdinand Hodler, a major figure in Swiss art, and the perspective of writer and essayist Metin Arditi on his work.
Metin Arditi invites us to rediscover Hodler through the eyes of a writer: a personal perspective attentive to the connections between art, history, memory and identity. His own journey between Turkey and Switzerland informs a particular reflection on belonging and on the ways in which a country tells and represents its own story.
In light of the exhibition Ferdinand Hodler. Profession of Faith, which explores the connections between Hodler’s work and religion, the discussion will focus on the spiritual dimension of his painting. How does Hodler transform the idea of creation and transpose it into his representation of nature? And how does this quest for unity, contemplation and transcendence continue to resonate today?
This conversation will bring the painter’s vision into dialogue with the writer’s voice, bringing together two sensibilities and two eras, and offering a renewed perspective on the work of Ferdinand Hodler.

Cette table ronde propose une rencontre entre littérature et peinture autour de Ferdinand Hodler, figure majeure de l’art suisse, et du regard que lui porte Metin Arditi, écrivain et essayiste.
Metin Arditi invitera à redécouvrir Hodler avec son regard d’écrivain : un regard personnel et attentif aux liens entre art, histoire, mémoire et identité. Son propre parcours, entre la Turquie et la Suisse, nourrit une réflexion particulière sur l’appartenance et sur la manière dont un pays se raconte et se représente.
À la lumière de l’exposition Ferdinand Hodler. Profession de foi, qui explore les liens entre l’œuvre de Hodler et le fait religieux, la discussion portera sur la dimension spirituelle de sa peinture. Comment Hodler transforme-t-il l’idée de création et la transpose-t-il dans sa représentation de la nature ? Et comment cette quête d’unité, de méditation et d’élévation résonne-t-elle encore aujourd’hui ?
Cette conversation sera l’occasion de croiser le regard du peintre et la voix de l’écrivain, de faire dialoguer deux sensibilités et deux époques, et de poser un regard renouvelé sur l’œuvre de Ferdinand Hodler.
