Shadow is a colour
Paul Cezanne once said that “ Shadow is a colour as light is, but less brilliant; light and shadow are only the relation of two tones.” Those who work in instant photography could not agree more with Cezanne’s statement - we know the importance of light, but a shadow has exactly same importance. We treat shadows as colour, as protagonist in their own right and as significant aides to support the main visual focus. We sometimes even make them the main visual focus. We play with shadows, we invert them, avoid them and search for them. Perhaps shadows can become a metaphor for something else. A forgotten dream? A person? Something which follows us in our artistic work, one could even say haunts us.
