Von Jean-Christophe Sanchez, Präsident der Société Ramond, außerordentlicher Professor, Doktor der Geschichte und assoziierter Forscher bei FRAMESPA, UMR 5136, CNRS und Universität Toulouse-Jean-Jaurès.
Von Maxwell-Lytes fotografischen Tafeln bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Bildern des Mondes, der Sonne, der Planeten und der Landschaften verfolgt diese Konferenz die Geschichte des Pic du Midi durch seine Bildproduktion.
Jean-Christophe Sanchez wird die Astrophotographie in die lange wissenschaftliche Geschichte des Pic du Midi und seines Observatoriums einbringen. Er wird die ersten Anblicke der Fundstelle, die aufeinanderfolgende Installation der Kuppeln, die Instrumente zur Himmelsbeobachtung, die Arbeiten von Baldet, Lyot, Rösch und Müller, das Abenteuer des Mondatlas sowie die aktuellen Formen der astronomischen und historischen Bildgebung beleuchten.
Die Konferenz wird zeigen, wie jede Generation von Instrumenten eine materielle und visuelle Spur hinterlassen hat: Gebäude, Kuppeln, fotografische Platten, Archive, Publikationen und wissenschaftliche Bilder. Sie wird es ermöglichen zu verstehen, wie sich das Observatorium im Rhythmus der Forschungsbedürfnisse entwickelt hat und dabei das Bild des Pic du Midi prägt: das eines Berges mit einer wissenschaftlichen Stadt, die zu einer echten Kulturlandschaft geworden ist.
Diese fotografische Geschichte beleuchtet direkt die Kandidatur des Geländes als Weltkulturerbe. Seit seinen Ursprüngen ist die wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit des Pic du Midi eng mit der Aufwertung des Gipfels verbunden. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wissenschaftlern, lokalen Akteuren und Tourismusfachleuten hat es der Sternwarte ermöglicht, ihre Aktivitäten trotz der extremen Belastungen des Hochgebirges fortzusetzen.
Aus dieser Perspektive sind die Bilder Bezugspunkte und Zeugnisse, um das zu vermitteln, was den außergewöhnlichen universellen Wert dieses Welterbe-Kandidaten ausmacht.

Photography and astrophotography at the Pic du Midi and its observatory: more than 150 years of images in the heart of a cultural landscape candidate for world heritage

From the photographic plates of Maxwell-Lyte to contemporary images of the Moon, the Sun, planets and landscapes, this conference traces the history of the Pic du Midi through its production of images.
Jean-Christophe Sanchez will replace astrophotography in the long scientific history of the Pic du Midi and its observatory. He will evoke the first views of the site, the successive installation of cupolas, the instruments dedicated to the observation of the sky, the works of Baldet, Lyot, Rösch and Müller, the adventure of the Lunar Atlas, as well as the current forms of astronomical and patrimonial imaging.
The conference will show how each generation of instruments has left a material and visual trace: buildings, domes, photographic plates, archives, publications and scientific images. It will allow us to understand how the observatory has developed in line with research needs, while shaping the image of the Pic du Midi: that of a mountain topped by a scientific city, which has become a true cultural landscape.
This photographic history directly informs the site’s application for World Heritage status. Since its origins, the scientific activity of the Pic du Midi has been closely linked to the promotion of the summit. The cooperation between scientists, local actors and tourism professionals has thus allowed the observatory to continue its activities despite the extreme constraints of the high mountains.
In this perspective, the images constitute as many benchmarks and testimonies to convey what lies behind the outstanding universal value of this candidate property for World Heritage.

Evocherà le prime vedute del sito, la successiva installazione delle cupole, gli strumenti dedicati all'osservazione del cielo, i lavori di Baldet, Lyot, Rösch e Müller, l'avventura dell'Atlante lunare, nonché le forme attuali dell'imaging astronomico e patrimoniale.
La conferenza mostrerà come ogni generazione di strumenti ha lasciato una traccia materiale e visiva: edifici, cupole, lastre fotografiche, archivi, pubblicazioni e immagini scientifiche. Permetterà di comprendere come l'osservatorio si sia sviluppato al ritmo delle esigenze della ricerca, plasmando allo stesso tempo l'immagine del pic du Midi: quella di una montagna sormontata da una città scientifica, diventata un vero e proprio paesaggio culturale.
Questa storia fotografica illumina direttamente la candidatura del sito al patrimonio mondiale. Fin dalle sue origini, l'attività scientifica del Pic du Midi è strettamente legata alla valorizzazione della vetta. La cooperazione tra scienziati, attori locali e professionisti del turismo ha permesso all'osservatorio di continuare le sue attività nonostante le estreme difficoltà dell'alta montagna.

Des plaques photographiques de Maxwell-Lyte aux images contemporaines de la Lune, du Soleil, des planètes et des paysages, cette conférence retrace l’histoire du pic du Midi à travers sa production d’images.
Jean-Christophe Sanchez replacera l’astrophotographie dans la longue histoire scientifique du pic du Midi et de son observatoire. Il évoquera les premières vues du site, l’installation successive des coupoles, les instruments dédiés à l’observation du ciel, les travaux de Baldet, Lyot, Rösch et Müller, l’aventure de l’Atlas lunaire, ainsi que les formes actuelles de l’imagerie astronomique et patrimoniale.
La conférence montrera comment chaque génération d’instruments a laissé une trace matérielle et visuelle : bâtiments, coupoles, plaques photographiques, archives, publications et images scientifiques. Elle permettra de comprendre comment l’observatoire s’est développé au rythme des besoins de la recherche, tout en façonnant l’image du pic du Midi : celle d’une montagne coiffée d’une cité scientifique, devenue un véritable paysage culturel.
Cette histoire photographique éclaire directement la candidature du site au patrimoine mondial. Depuis ses origines, l’activité scientifique du pic du Midi est étroitement liée à la valorisation du sommet. De las placas fotográficas de Maxwell-Lyte a las imágenes contemporáneas de la Luna, del Sol, de los planetas y de los paisajes, esta conferencia relata la historia del pico del Mediodía a través de su producción de imágenes.
Jean-Christophe Sanchez reemplazará la astrofotografía en la larga historia científica del pico del Mediodía y su observatorio. Evocará las primeras vistas del sitio, la instalación sucesiva de las cúpulas, los instrumentos dedicados a la observación del cielo, los trabajos de Baldet, Lyot, Rösch y Müller, la aventura del Atlas lunar, así como las formas actuales de la imagen astronómica y patrimonial.
La conferencia mostrará cómo cada generación de instrumentos ha dejado una huella material y visual: edificios, cúpulas, placas fotográficas, archivos, publicaciones e imágenes científicas. Permitirá comprender cómo el observatorio se ha desarrollado al ritmo de las necesidades de la investigación, a la vez que da forma a la imagen del pic du Midi: la de una montaña coronada por una ciudad científica, convertida en un verdadero paisaje cultural.
Esta historia fotográfica ilumina directamente la candidatura del sitio al patrimonio mundial. Desde sus orígenes, la actividad científica del pic du Midi está estrechamente vinculada a la valorización de la cumbre. La cooperación entre científicos, actores locales y profesionales del turismo ha permitido al observatorio continuar sus actividades a pesar de las limitaciones extremas de la alta montaña.
