The Center for National Monuments offers at the Château de Voltaire, from May 8, 2025 to January 4, 2026, the exhibition 'À la table de Voltaire'. Fruit of a collaboration between the Voltaire Society, the International Center for Study of the 18th century and the Association Voltaire in Ferney, it was placed under the commission of Mrs. Ulla Kölving (Voltaire Society), and Mr. François Jacob (Centre international d'étude du XVIIIe siècle and Université Jean Moulin-Lyon 3), by Mrs. Jacqueline Queneau, specialist in tableware and curator, by Mr. Jean-Louis Janin Daviet, scenographer, and Mr. François-Xavier Verger, administrator of the castle.
The exhibition will present three major stages symbolizing the art of the table in the 18th century, and more particularly with Voltaire.
The discovery will begin with the table known as the Grand Couvert: it will highlight the art of setting the table and more particularly the French service. The journey will continue with the evocation of the role of the table among the philosophers of the Enlightenment where gustatory pleasures and intellectual pleasures are closely linked and where the art of conversation flourishes. Finally, the last step will allow to highlight the dinner in the literature of this century.
