Als erster Fotograf der Lyoner Tagespresse, dessen Werk in die Sammlungen der Stadtbibliothek von Lyon aufgenommen wurde, nimmt Georges Vermard dort einen besonderen Platz ein. Sein 1990 erworbener Bestand umfasst fast 15.000 Fotografien, die das Leben und den gesellschaftlichen Wandel in Lyon in den 1950er- bis 1970er-Jahren dokumentieren.
Georges Vermard, der im Februar 2025 verstorben ist, wird heute mit einer großen Retrospektive gewürdigt, die sowohl seinen journalistischen Blick als auch sein Gespür für Komposition, seinen zurückhaltenden Humor und seinen tiefen Humanismus offenbart.
Die Ausstellung ist nach acht großen Themenbereichen gegliedert (Konsumgesellschaft, Stadtplanung, Mode, Sport, Unterhaltung, Alltag sowie große Ereignisse in Lyon) und zeichnet den Wandel einer Stadt und einer Gesellschaft im Umbruch nach. Sie erinnert zudem daran, wie sehr die Pressefotografie heute eine wesentliche historische Quelle für das Verständnis unserer jüngeren Vergangenheit darstellt.

As the first photographer from Lyon’s daily press to have his work included in the collections of the Lyon Municipal Library, Georges Vermard occupies a unique place there. Acquired in 1990, his collection comprises nearly 15,000 photographs depicting life and societal changes in Lyon from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Georges Vermard, who passed away in February 2025, is now being honoured through a major retrospective that reveals not only his journalistic eye but also his sense of composition, his understated humour and his profound humanism.
Organised around eight major themes (consumer society, urban planning, fashion, sport, entertainment, everyday life and major events in Lyon), the exhibition traces the transformations of a city and a society in the midst of change. It also serves as a reminder of how press photography today constitutes an essential historical source for understanding our recent past.

Primo fotografo della stampa quotidiana lionese ad entrare a far parte delle collezioni della Biblioteca comunale di Lione, Georges Vermard occupa in essa un posto speciale. Acquisito nel 1990, il suo fondo è costituito da circa 15.000 fotografie che ritraggono la vita e i cambiamenti sociali di Lione dagli anni ’50 agli anni ’70.
Scomparso nel febbraio 2025, Georges Vermard viene oggi omaggiato con una grande retrospettiva che mette in luce sia il suo sguardo da giornalista sia il suo senso della composizione, il suo umorismo discreto e il suo profondo umanesimo.
Organizzata attorno a otto grandi temi (società dei consumi, urbanistica, moda, sport, spettacolo, vita quotidiana e grandi eventi lionesi), la mostra ripercorre le trasformazioni di una città e di una società in piena evoluzione. Ricorda inoltre quanto la fotografia giornalistica costituisca oggi una fonte storica essenziale per comprendere il nostro passato recente.

Premier photographe de la presse quotidienne lyonnaise à entrer dans les collections de la Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, Georges Vermard y occupe une place singulière. Acquis en 1990, son fonds est constitué de près de 15 000 photographies présentant la vie et les mutations sociétales de Lyon des années 1950 à 1970.
Disparu en février 2025, Georges Vermard est aujourd'hui honoré à travers une grande rétrospective qui révèle autant son regard de journaliste que son sens de la composition, son humour discret et son profond humanisme.
Organisée autour de huit grandes thématiques (société de consommation, urbanisme, mode, sport, spectacles, vie quotidienne ou encore grands événements lyonnais) l'exposition retrace les transformations d'une ville et d'une société en pleine mutation. Elle rappelle également combien la photographie de presse constitue aujourd'hui une source historique essentielle pour comprendre notre passé récent.

Georges Vermard, el primer fotógrafo de la prensa diaria de Lyon en formar parte de los fondos de la Biblioteca Municipal de Lyon, ocupa en ella un lugar singular. Adquirido en 1990, su fondo está compuesto por cerca de 15 000 fotografías que muestran la vida y los cambios sociales de Lyon entre los años 1950 y 1970.
Fallecido en febrero de 2025, Georges Vermard es hoy homenajeado a través de una gran retrospectiva que pone de manifiesto tanto su mirada periodística como su sentido de la composición, su humor discreto y su profundo humanismo.
Organizada en torno a ocho grandes temas (la sociedad de consumo, el urbanismo, la moda, el deporte, los espectáculos, la vida cotidiana o incluso los grandes eventos de Lyon), la exposición recorre las transformaciones de una ciudad y una sociedad en plena evolución. También nos recuerda hasta qué punto la fotografía de prensa constituye hoy en día una fuente histórica esencial para comprender nuestro pasado reciente.
