At the time of the Bicentenary of Photography, Walter Benjamin’s formula shows how today, photography constitutes a bridge intended to bring together different artistic disciplines. In his latest works, Stéphane Couturier assembles two photographs according to a precise protocol, which allows the development of a combinatorial dynamic. Photography then becomes a material, a reservoir of forms at the service of a game of deconstruction - reconstruction, in order to reveal new forms and materialities. By merging two photographs from two different families of images, the photographic fragments intertwine. The resulting hybrid plot animates a kind of pictorial intrigue. This research led him to explore the works of Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Fernand Pouillon, Jean Lurçat, Oscar Niemeyer and many others. It is not a question of painting with photography but of establishing a disturbing complementarity between photography, architecture, painting and other mediums such as tapestry or ceramics. These dynamic images use the techniques of interlacing and grid: reflections on how architecture shapes our perception and our imagination, they are also indirect tributes to some great architects and modern artists, Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Jean Lurçat... An artist who has become multidisciplinary, the latest developments in his work are oriented towards tapestry, ceramics, video installations and modular works in the form of polyptychs. Started in 2020, his research on tapestry combines the photographic medium with the textile medium to create a contemporary tapestry. Isn’t the tapestry point close to the pixel of digital photography? Weaving, like other mediums, becomes another possibility to translate this will of generalized hybridization which participates in this reconciliation of the arts. All the elements are energized between them, interlocking to infinity, like windows that define and expand the gaze. In June 2024, Stéphane Couturier was the winner of the call for projects led by the Mobilier National, for the creation of two tapestries celebrating the 800th anniversary of Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral.
