Tribute to the work of Gilbert Garcin, whose poetic and surrealist universe continues to fascinate.
Born in 1929 in La Ciotat and after a long career at the head of a lighting company, Gilbert Garcin was introduced to photography in the early 1990s. From simple means – a table, minimalist decors, spotlights and a video projector – he develops, from the "shed" of the family garden transformed into a summary studio, a singular visual universe. In his black and white compositions, Mister G., the artist’s fictional alter ego, embodies a modern Pierrot. Gilbert Garcin humorously explores the paradoxes of existence and offers a tender and derisory vision of the human condition.
His works have been presented at the Rencontres d'Arles, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and the Malmö Museum in Sweden.
