In der immensen literarischen und wissenschaftlichen Unternehmung des großen Naturforschers Buffon, die sich in vierundvierzig Bände entfaltet, nehmen die Tiere einen vorherrschenden Platz ein. Es geht darum, jede existierende Art zu benennen und darzustellen. Es gibt jedoch eine Ausnahme, eine Anomalie, ein Blatt mit dem Titel Das anonyme Tier. Romain Billard lässt sich von ihm inspirieren und untersucht diesen Unbekannten, dem die Künstlerin Gloria Friedmann auf ihre Weise Tribut zollt.
