The Abbey of Saint-Roman in Beaucaire. Concise testimonies

Entitled "L'abbaye de Saint-Roman à Beaucaire - Témoignages lapidaires", the exhibition proposes until 16 May 2027, to discover a few centuries of history of this fabulous cave site, according to a route where will be unveiled ancient documents and sculpted pieces of the architectural decor.
In the current state of knowledge, Saint-Roman appears as a monastery of episcopal foundation, dating back to the 10th century and which remains in the Episcopal lordship until 1538. Inscribed stone monuments and carved stone pieces, studied as part of the collective research program between 2019 and 2022, will evoke the historical and architectural evolution of the monastery from the Romanesque age to the modern era.
Funerary furniture and everyday life will be an opportunity to lift a part of the veil on some aspects of the social and religious life of the inhabitants of the Butte de Saint-Roman. Some written and photographic testimonies will invite you to discover or rediscover this part of the more recent history of the site which, between 1538 (date of the sale of the site by the abbey of Psalmodi) and 1989, will successively belong to thirteen different families then to an industrial company, before becoming, from 1990, property of the City of Beaucaire.

Intitulée « L’abbaye de Saint-Roman à Beaucaire - Témoignages lapidaires », l’exposition propose jusqu’au 16 mai 2027, de découvrir quelques siècles d’histoire de ce fabuleux site rupestre, selon un parcours où seront dévoilés documents anciens et pièces sculptées du décor architectural.
Dans l'état actuel des connaissances, Saint-Roman apparaît comme un monastère de fondation épiscopale, remontant au Xe siècle et qui reste dans la seigneurie épiscopale jusqu'en 1538. Monuments lapidaires inscrits et pièces lapidaires sculptées, étudiés dans le cadre du Programme collectif de recherches entre 2019 et 2022, permettront d’évoquer l’évolution historique et architecturale du monastère depuis l’âge roman jusqu’à l’Epoque moderne.
Mobilier funéraire et de la vie quotidienne seront l’occasion de soulever un pan du voile sur quelques-uns des aspects de la vie sociale et religieuse des habitants de la butte de Saint-Roman. Quelques témoignages écrits et photographiques vous inviteront à découvrir ou redécouvrir cette partie de l’histoire plus récente du site qui, entre 1538 (date de la vente du site par l’abbaye de Psalmodi) et 1989, appartiendra successivement à treize familles différentes puis à une société industrielle, avant de devenir, à partir de 1990, propriété de la Ville de Beaucaire.

Titulada «L'abbaye de Saint-Roman à Beaucaire - Témoignages lapidaires», la exposición propone hasta el 16 de mayo de 2027, descubrir algunos siglos de historia de este fabuloso sitio rupestre, según un recorrido donde se descubrirán documentos antiguos y piezas esculpidas del decorado arquitectónico.
En el estado actual de los conocimientos, Saint-Roman aparece como un monasterio de fundación episcopal, que se remonta al siglo X y permaneció en el señorío episcopal hasta 1538. Monumentos lapidarios inscritos y piezas lapidarias esculpidas, estudiadas en el marco del Programa colectivo de investigaciones entre 2019 y 2022, permitirán evocar la evolución histórica y arquitectónica del monasterio desde la época románica hasta la época moderna.
Mobiliario funerario y de la vida cotidiana serán una oportunidad para levantar un velo sobre algunos aspectos de la vida social y religiosa de los habitantes de la colina de Saint-Roman. Algunos testimonios escritos y fotográficos le invitarán a descubrir o redescubrir esta parte de la historia más reciente del sitio que, entre 1538 (fecha de la venta del sitio por la abadía de Psalmodi) y 1989, pertenecerá sucesivamente a trece familias diferentes, luego a una sociedad industrial, antes de convertirse, a partir de 1990, en propiedad de la Ciudad de Beaucaire.
