Four female musicians take the stage with their shamisen, traditional Japanese three-stringed instruments.
Then the folk songs begin to transform.
With Mitsune, ancient tales take on a new dimension. The voices are powerful, the rhythms almost ritualistic, and the arrangements blend psychedelic influences, rock energy, and a highly visual aesthetic.
Based in Berlin and composed of artists from several countries, the group brings Japanese traditions to life within a resolutely contemporary soundscape.
And at one point during the concert, you feel as though you’re witnessing a ritual from another time… but amplified.
